Alright! We got a chance to catch up with Jovita Harper, the creative mastermind behind Conscious Designz. If you had not had a chance to check out her collection yet, click the link above to check out some of her work. She also does a lot of custom work, so don’t hesitate to contact her if you want something special! Here is what she had to say when we got to ask her a few questions:

Can you describe what has inspired you the most in your life to get you to where you are today?

I have been creating since birth. Throughout my adolescence and early adulthood, I limited my creative expressions to simply writing poetry, calligraphies and drawing on my clothes, walls, papers- on anything available. More recently, I discovered a desire to extend my creativity to sewing. This desire turned into a necessity after my lay off from mortgage industry and becoming underemployed, almost three years ago. My need for expression creatively and providing a secure future for my daughter is the reason I continue in my pursuit!

Can you describe your relationship with Jacksonville?

I am a local entrepreneur, mother and community supporter. I have worked with a local non-profit agency to establish a course to teach single mothers in my community the life skill of sewing. I am a committed to developing my craft and influence in my community. I have partnered with several local small businesses, artists and the Jacksonville Chamber to ensure I maintain a viable and sustainable business. I was a featured artist in the recent KESHA exhibit (below) displayed at the Jacksonville Main Library.

What do you gain most from your work?

I have always believed the work of your hands has an empowering force. My ultimate goal is to teach that same creative expression to those who seek such empowerment and freedom through creativity.

What is your favorite thing to do in Jacksonville?

I love to travel to the various state parks throughout Jacksonville, especially Ortega, I sit read and watch the city light up!

What is your favorite place to eat?

I am learning to eat out more as the food scene expands within Jacksonville. My favorite local business and restaurant is Durkeeville  & Co– not only for the fresh, delicious food- it’s a family run business.

What is your favorite bridge?

My favorite bridge is the Main St bridge. I run the Main St bridge and run the South bank! I love to watch the sunrise there, the dolphins jump and the peace of the morning’s cool breezes.

That sounds great in this summer heat! Thank you Jovita!!
